About Tauranga City
Tauranga is a city in transformation. The area of the city is 12,742 hectares. The landscape is dominated by the harbour, the long white beaches, the Kaimai mountain ranges and the volcanic cone of Mauao ('the Mount'). The city's population has doubled in the last 20 years to an estimated 105,000 and is expected to reach 144,000 people by 2021.
Of Tauranga's population, 16.1% identify themselves as Maori - higher than the national average of 14.7%. Many Maori are affiliated to one of three main iwi - Ngaiterangi, Ngati Ranginui and Ngati Pukenga. Increasing numbers of people in the 30-45 age bracket (often with children) are now choosing to live in Tauranga as a lifestyle choice.
Tauranga has a mild climate - the average temperature is 14.2C (average high 18.3C) - with about 2,400 sunshine hours per year.
