If you haven’t been to the Bay of Plenty for a while – you probably won’t recognise it! No longer a sleepy holiday destination, the strong population and business growth over the last few years has Tauranga positioned to be the third largest city outside Auckland by 2013. The difference is that, in the Bay, you can get to work in half the time, take your surfboard and be out on the water by half past five!

Why is the Bay of Plenty such a popular place to live? It’s the quality of life that sets the region apart – and a lot of that life is lived outdoors. For those with a more laid-back lifestyle in mind, there are bush and waterfront walking trails, golf courses, wineries and markets to visit. The region’s sunny climate ensures these activities can be enjoyed all year round.

Aptly named for the plentiful supply of fresh fruit and produce on its doorstep, the Bay of Plenty has a thriving café and restaurant scene that makes good use of locally grown foods in creative ways. Some of the best restaurants in New Zealand are in the Bay, including renowned Somerset Cottage. The Strand is the main entertainment area in Tauranga, with restaurants and cafés lining the harbour and providing spectacular views. There are also popular cafés on Mount Maunganui’s beachfront and at other scenic locations around the region.

Life in the Bay of Plenty certainly doesn’t come to a halt after hours, with a variety of bars and nightclubs at both Tauranga and Mount Maunganui. On the weekend, the Strand is transformed into a pulsating mix of people taking in the crowds and music in pubs and clubs. With regular live music and other kinds of entertainment, the Bay’s nightlife is exciting and vibrant.

The region's economic growth is also high, topping the country for the last two years. This has provided a stimulating environment for innovative, leading-edge companies in sectors as diverse as natural health products, nutraceuticals, lily bulb breeding, software development and adventure sports equipment. In addition, the region is home to ZESPRI International, one of the country’s largest exporters, and the thriving Port of Tauranga – New Zealand’s largest export gateway. The local employment market is also booming, with staggering growth in the labour market and record lows in unemployment providing many career opportunities for Kiwi expats returning home.
